Dr. Kami Hoss marks certain daily habits to follow for good oral health

Good oral health is good for the overall well-being of a person. Proper oral care is necessary for healthy teeth and gums. Here are a few tips one must follow for good oral health:

  • Brush teeth twice daily: Regular brushing is vital for preventing gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. One should ideally brush their teeth twice with fluoride toothpaste.  Fluoride plays an important role in the fight against tooth decay. It is prudent to replace a toothbrush every three months or sooner in case it starts to show signs of wear, like fraying bristles.
  • Brush every surface: Whether one is using a manual or electric toothbrush, it is important to brush the inside surfaces, outside surfaces as well as the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Rather than brushing back and forth, one must brush the teeth in circular motions.
  • Do not rinse with water straight after brushing: It is better not to rinse with water straight after brushing, as doing so can wash the protective fluoride away. One should spit out any excess toothpaste instead.
  • Chew sugarless gum regularly: Sugarless gum can stimulate saliva production, which helps wash away food debris that can lead to tooth decay. Moreover, chewing a piece of sugarless gum provides something to do with the mouth in case one has a craving for sweets.
  • Floss at least once a day: Floss and interdental cleaners help reach the difficult areas between the teeth. Regular cleaning is necessary to dislodge food and can reduce the risk of gum disease and bad breath by removing plaque that forms along the gum line.
  • Eat fruit twice daily: Fruits, especially the ones with high water content, are good for oral health. Hence, one should try to eat a piece of fruit every day.
  • Do not eat sugary foods frequently: People who frequently consume sugary food are more likely to have cavities or tooth decay. One must also be careful about drinking too much coffee, as it stains the teeth.
  • Use mouthwash regularly: Mouthwash can help kill the bacteria that may hide in the crevices of the mouth.
  • Do not neglect the tongue: Keeping the tongue clean is important for oral health. One should use a tongue scraper twice a day to gently clean the tongue.

Dr. Kami Hoss mentions that in addition to following the tips discussed above, one must also visit a dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Regular dentist visits are vital for good oral health, and can help identify issues like tooth decay, periodontal disease, and cavities in their early stages.
